In nature, most aquarium fish species rarely eat other fish. Only a minority of the species are fish-eaters, but most aquarium fish feed mainly on fishmeal, as it is widely distributed and comparatively cheap. Nevertheless, there are better ways to feed your aquarium fish, both nutritionally and ecologically.

In 2014 Dr. Stephan M. Tanner and Allen Repashy launched a groundbreaking new fish food: Fruut-Luups. A combination of papaya, mango, organic banana and fig, supplemented by easily digestible black soldier fly, krill and squid. The idea behind this formula was that fish in nature often eat fallen fruit with all the extras in the form of flying or boring insects and their larvae. While the original concept was very successful, over time we have developed this "fruit snack" into a more complete, healthy and nutritious formula.

When the rainy season starts, large parts of the tropical and subtropical rainforests around the world will be flooded. Countless species of fish such as characins, catfish, loaches, barbels, knife fish, cichlids, livebearers, killifish, labyrinth fish, rainbow fish, gobies, gudgeons and owls follow the waters flowing into the forests. These "rainforest explorers" are rewarded with a rich abundance of land and flying insects, other invertebrates, nuts, fruits, seeds, legumes, herbs and green plants, which are now within reach due to the increased water level.

When the original idea for Fruut-Luups was born, the manufacturers had the Amazon swamp forests in mind. The forest flooded with black water is called Igapó and the white water type is known as Várzea. In the tropical swamp forests many legumes grow, which belong to the bean family (Fabaceae). In fact, the Fabaceae family is the most common family found in the tropical rain and dry forests of South America and Africa. Therefore we have included pea flour and alfalfa, both from the Fabaceae family, in the formula. Since seeds and nuts play a role depending on the type of forest, we added almond, coconut and flax seeds to represent these food groups, which contain valuable fats and minerals and serve as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins. As a natural source of anthocyanins we have added Black Mulberry fruit powder. There is evidence that anthocyanins inhibit mold growth and act as antioxidants. This ingredient also gives the new recipe an attractive colour, smell and taste. These ingredients represent the native swamp trees and shrubs, as most of them are not commercially available. We have retained organic banana and organic mango, fruits that have been proven in many tests. As a result, the new formula has a much broader plant base including fruits, nuts, seeds and pods.

High quality proteins and fats from three major invertebrate groups complement this diet: Flour from black soldier flies (substitute for insects), krill (substitute for freshwater shrimp, which is very common in the tropics, but krill has a highhigher content of eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) and squid (substitute for molluscs [snails, slugs and freshwater clams]). All these animals are common in the freshwater swamp forests and are the main sources of protein and fat for adult fish to spawn, for juveniles to grow and for juveniles to fatten up for their long migrations back to their spawning grounds further upstream.

These premium nutrients are enriched with nutraceutical premixes of dandelion, nettle, garlic, ginger and cinnamon based on scientifically proven research. Natural carotenoids (not synthetic) including astaxanthin, capsanthin, capsorubin, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, neoaxanthin, cucurbitaxanthin, violaxanthin, lutein, echinenone, canthaxanthin and lycopene supplement the Repashy vitamin and mineral premix tested.

Therefore Repashy proudly presents version 2.0 of Fruut-Luups, now more appropriately called Igapó Explorer, our new rainforest forager formula! This food is a complete food for numerous species of aquarium fish, including characins, barbels, danios, catfish, loaches, cichlids, killifish, livebearers, knife fish, labyrinth fish, rainbow fish, gobies and many other fish species such as puffer fish. Even many saltwater species that spend their childhood in mangrove forests or many coral species that live in the pasture will devour this food with enthusiasm. Bon appetite!

The formula for all rainforest species. Contains invertebrates, nuts, fruits, seeds, legumes, herbs and green food.

GUIDELINES: Bring water to the boil on the stove, microwave or kettle. Pour boiling water into a bowl and immediately stir in powder (1 part powder to 2-3 parts water). Leave to cool or fill into a mould immediately. The gel becomes solid at room temperature. Cut into pieces or work into a slow-release jerky. After production, the gel should be treated as a fresh food and can be aerated and cooled for up to two weeks or frozen for up to six months.

JERKY: Prepare the gel as described above, pour it into a deep container and then cut the gel into 0.65 cm thick slices of the desired size. Dry completely in an oven or dehydrator at 65°C (150°F). (8-12 hours typical).

ADDITIVES: Fly larvae meal, krill meal, banana powder, cuttlefish meal, mango powder, pea flour, mulberry fruit powder, dandelion powder, seaweed flour, almond flour, coconut flour, ground flaxseed, alfalfa flour, locust bean gum, lemon seed flour, salt of the seaweedure, lecithin, nettle, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, phaffia yeast, dried watermelon, rose hips, hibiscus flowerte, marigold flower, marigold blossom, paprika, turmeric, dried kelp, calcium propionate and potassium sorbate (as preservative), magnesium amino acid chelate, zinc methionine hydroxy analogue chelate, manganese methionine hydroxy analogue chelate, copper methionine hydroxy analogue chelate. Vitamins: (Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium L-Ascorbyl 2 Monophosphate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Beta Carotene, Pantothenic Acid, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamin Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex).
